National Childhood Injury Prevention Strategy Print this Article

On March 3, 2010, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, delivered the Government’s Speech from the Throne to open the Third Session of Canada’s 40th Parliament and outline the broad agenda of the Government of Canada. Safe Saskatchewan is particularly pleased to hear that Canada’s Government is committed to the launch of a national strategy on childhood injury prevention.

To prevent accidents that harm our children and youth, our Government will also work in partnership with non-governmental organizations to launch a national strategy on childhood injury prevention.

“Early research, conducted by Safe Saskatchewan proved children can have a profound effect on behaviour change in society,” says Gord Moker, CEO of Safe Saskatchewan. “I look forward to supporting our national injury prevention partners: Safe Communities Canada, Safe Kids Canada, SMARTRISK and ThinkFirst Canada, in their developments with the Canadian Government.”

Preventable injuries in Canada cost our economy $19.8 billion annually and Saskatchewan is not immune to this issue. It is estimated that unintentional injuries in our province cost our economy $1 billion every year.
